About Me

Paul Jones

History and politics have been my passions since I was very young, and I relish the opportunity to work with eager students on these subjects. Tales of legendary figures and stories of cataclysmic events captured my imagination, giving me a thirst for learning more about what motivated people and what drove significant change.

As the years passed by, the inspiration drawn from childhood stories led me into a serious academic pursuit of history and politics. The mystique and curiosity of the past, and how we can use it to inform the present, continued to underpin my fascination with the subjects. Ultimately, I completed a BA (Hons), MRes and PhD in history before becoming a qualified teacher in 2014.

I have taught in state and private secondary education as well as higher education since 2009 and am currently the head of a very successful history and politics department at an independent school. My teaching resulted in me being elected an Associate Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in 2022.

Since 2016, my teaching has increasingly specialised on US history and politics from c.1865 to the present. I draw links between the past and the present whilst taking inspiration from the works of key US thinkers such as Thomas Sowell to create lessons which are fresh, engaging and relevant for my students.

Alongside my teaching, I am active in historical research and have written pieces on a range of topics including the English Civil Wars, the Slave Trade, the World Wars and the Falklands War. I frequently use my research to deliver whole school assemblies and support PSHE.
